CONSERVATORIES
Orangeries
Orangeries are ideal for offering a more substantial structure than a Conservatory or Glass Extension Sunroom. The Cardinal Home Improvements orangery celebrates everything about the scale and ornamentation of classic Renaissance architecture. Tall Georgian-style windows are a hallmark that define the orangery design. Our ’A’-rated PVCu double-glazed frames ensure that modern energy-efficiency couple with this traditional design.
Additionally, we offer a number of options to include the ability to incorporate dramatic glazed lanterns and more. Inside, a ceiling pelmet allows us to accommodate new lighting, whilst the outside gutter is gracefully hidden by an elegant decorative cornice.

A Historical Journey
The origins of modern orangeries can be traced back to Holland from the 17th-century, where their modern foundations were laid. The concept itself, however, may have much older roots. Evidence of similar structures have been found dating back to 14th-century France. Even then, the Romans had constructed elaborate greenhouses for centuries long before that.
The term “orangery” first emerged in the 16th century. Originally, these orangeries were designated as collections of trees that adorned gardens. Further to this, with the advent of plant pots, they eventually found their way indoors, adding a touch of nature’s splendour into our interior spaces. Traditionally, wealthy families started to build these grand structures to house their exotic citrus plants, which were prized for their beauty and as symbols of wealth and prestige.
The idea quickly spread to other parts of Europe and evolved into the orangeries we know now. Today, orangeries are no longer primarily used for housing citrus trees but have become desirable home extensions. They are prized for their aesthetic appeal, combining the elegance of traditional architecture with modern functionality.

The Difference Between an Orangery and a Conservatory?
Conservatory

Historically, orangeries and conservatories were easily distinguishable by their distinct styles, but today, the differences between the two have blurred, making it more challenging for homeowners to navigate their options. Traditionally, orangeries were grand, opulent structures built in large period homes to cultivate orange trees. Their design featured solid pillars for protection and expansive glass sections that allowed sunlight to nourish the plants.
In modern times, orangeries have evolved and are now commonly found on smaller homes, often resembling conservatories in their design. They typically boast more substantial roofing, including lanterns or flat roofs, and an internal pelmet around the ceiling's perimeter to add a sense of grandeur. To retain their stately appearance, brick pillars or super-insulated aluminium columns are frequently used in their construction.
Orangery

On the other hand, conservatories are typically constructed with glass or polycarbonate panels, offering a seamless connection between your indoor and outdoor spaces. While they may not have the same solidity and grandeur as orangeries, modern advancements in technology—such as high-performance glass, insulated internal pelmets, and super-insulated columns—ensure that today’s conservatories can be just as impressive and comfortable.
In the contemporary design landscape, the boundaries between orangeries and conservatories have become more fluid. Orangeries can now feature floor-to-ceiling glass without the traditional brick pillars, creating a look reminiscent of a conservatory, and vice versa. As a homeowner, you have complete control over the design of your new space, allowing you to tailor the final installation to your exact preferences. This flexibility also gives you the opportunity to create something truly unique and stylish, with options to incorporate colours and decorative cornices that reflect your personal taste.
